['maɪkrəʊsɔft kɔːpə'reɪʃn], Abkürzung MS, amerikanischer Computerkonzern, führend bei Entwicklung, Produktion und Absatz von Software für Personalcomputer, gegründet 1975 von B. Gates und Paul Allen; Sitz: Redmond (Washington). 1981 führte Microsoft Corp. für die IBM Corporation das »Microsoft disc operating system« (MS-DOS) ein, wobei Microsoft Corp. (auch nach dem Bruch mit IBM 1990) die Rechte an MS-DOS behielt. Bekannte MS-Produkte sind z. B. die Systemsoftware Windows, die Betriebssysteme Windows 95 und Windows 2000 sowie der Web-Browser Internet Explorer. Der Konzern bietet mit Microsoft Network (MSN) einen Onlineservice an, gründete 1996 gemeinsam mit NBC einen neuen Nachrichtensender (MSNBC) und expandiert in den Multimediamarkt. Umsatz (2000): 23,0 Mrd. US-$; Beschäftige: rd. 44 000.
